George MacKerron
I’m a Senior Lecturer in Economics at the University of Sussex.
- I developed and run Mappiness, the world’s largest geo-located ESM study. Read our chapter in the 2020 UN World Happiness Report or our papers in Global Environment Change, the Economic Journal and others.
- I teach a popular module in Behavioural Economics and convene our PhD research methods training.
- Key research interests include wellbeing and behaviour, environmental quality, and spatial analysis.
- Work in progress looks at wellbeing in relation to Internet use, terrorism, environmental valuation (with Statistics Norway and others), and loss aversion in the context of football scores.
- I did my PhD at LSE, with prior degrees from Imperial and Cambridge. See my CV for details.
See me speak:
I’m a co-founder of Psychological Technologies.
- We make apps to support mindfulness and mental health (grief, anxiety). Apple loves them, and users do too.
- We work with enterprises on real-time insights and mental health tools for the workforce (see interview).
- We’re in HM Government’s Inclusive Economy Partnership. We’re digital innovation award winners.
I’m a full-stack geo/web/app developer and data scientist.
- For data I use mostly spatial SQL, Stata and Python.
- Otherwise I code mainly in Objective-C, PostgreSQL and TypeScript (here’s an example). I’m good with AWS.
- I create open-source software (I occasionally contribute too). I’ve worked on projects with the BBC and University of Cambridge.
